Why an account changes what an AI knows about you

An account gives a service a stable key. Without it, today's questions and last month's questions are separate events with nothing joining them. With it, they become one record that usually outlives any single conversation, and that record is what makes profiling possible at all.

Signing in feels like paperwork, so people treat it as paperwork. It is closer to a structural decision: it determines whether a service is capable of connecting the things you ask, or whether that connection is simply unavailable to it.

What an identifier does

Data about a person is only useful when it can be joined. An account provides the column everything else joins on. Once questions carry the same account, the service can see topics recurring over months, times of day, changes in what you work on. None of that requires anyone to read your messages; it falls out of the structure automatically.

Why deleting a conversation does not undo it

Deleting removes the conversation from your view, and sometimes from the store behind it. What deletion rarely touches is everything derived from that conversation while it existed: aggregate counts, model updates, security logs. The conversation goes, the shape it left stays.

Email addresses are stronger identifiers than they look

An email address is usually the same address used for other services, which makes it a join key across companies rather than only inside one. A phone number is stronger still, because it is tied to identity documents in most countries. Requiring either turns an anonymous visit into a named visit.

The alternative is not a weaker account

The alternative is no account. A service that never issues an identifier has nothing to file conversations under, so the profile is not protected by a policy, it is absent. That is a different kind of guarantee: a policy can change next quarter, and a missing column cannot be filled in retroactively.

The account decides what a legal request can reach

A request from a court or an authority names a person or an account, because that is how a request has to be written. A service holding conversations under an account can match the name and produce the history. A service holding no identifiers has nothing to match the name against, so the answer is not a refusal, it is an absence. This is also why the question of who owns the company matters less than the question of what the company keeps.

Questions about private AI

Is an anonymous account the same as no account?

No. An anonymous account still issues an identifier, and everything you do joins on it. What is missing is your name, which is the weakest part of a profile.

Does signing in with Google make it worse?

It adds a second company to the arrangement. The AI service learns which Google identity you are, and Google learns which services you sign in to.

Without an account, can a service still recognise my browser?

It can try, through fingerprinting. That is weaker and less stable than an account, and it degrades whenever your browser or network changes.

Start a conversation without an identifier and see how little is needed.
