How to check that an AI chat keeps no logs

You can test three things yourself in about a minute: whether an account is required, whether the conversation survives a closed tab, and whether the page loads third-party trackers. Server retention is not testable from outside, so for that part you are reading a policy rather than running a test.

A no-logs claim sits on a marketing page, and marketing pages are not evidence. Some of the claim can be checked from your own browser in under a minute. The rest cannot be checked at all from outside, and knowing which part is which keeps you from trusting a test that proves nothing.

Test 1: does it work without an account

Open the chat in a fresh browser window and type a question. If an answer comes back before anything asks for an email address, no account exists to attach the conversation to. This test is binary, and it is the strongest thing you can establish from outside. It is about what the service cannot do rather than about what the service promises not to do.

Test 2: close the tab and come back

Send a message, close the tab, then open the same address again. A chat that keeps recent conversations, as this one does for 30 days in the same browser, will list them again; that is a convenience, not a link to you. What the test shows is whether the conversation also appears in a different browser or a private window without a login. If it does, something is identifying you, and it is worth knowing what.

Test 3: look at what else the page loads

Open the network panel in your browser and reload the page. Requests going to advertising and analytics domains mean the visit is being reported to companies other than the one you are chatting with. A service can keep no logs of its own and still hand the visit to a third party, and the network panel shows that plainly.

What no test can show you

Whether text is written to a server log, how long that log is kept, and whether the conversation is used for training are all invisible from the outside. For those three you are reading a policy and judging how specific it is. A policy that names a retention period in hours is a different document from a policy that says data is kept only as long as necessary.

Questions about private AI

Does incognito mode make a chat private?

No. Incognito mode clears what your own browser stores. It changes nothing on the server, and the service still receives exactly the same requests.

What does it mean when a service publishes an audit?

It means an outside party looked at the systems at one point in time. That is stronger than a claim and weaker than a design that cannot store the data in the first place.

Is a self-hosted model the only truly private option?

Self-hosting removes the trust question, and it costs hardware and setup. A hosted service that requires no account removes most of the same risk without the hardware.

Run the first test here: no account is required, and recent chats are kept for 30 days.
